Rapid post-glacial bedrock weathering in coastal Norway

چکیده
Quantifying bedrock weathering rates under diverse climate conditions is essential to understanding timescales of landscape evolution. Yet, are often difficult constrain, and associating a weathered landform specific formative environment can be complicated by overprinting successive processes temporally varying climate. In this study, we investigate three sites between 59°N 69°N along the Norwegian coast that display grussic saprolite, tafoni, linear grooves on lithologies. These phenomena have been invoked as examples geomorphic archives predating Quaternary glaciations consequently indicators minimal glacial erosion. Here apply cosmogenic nuclide chronometry assess recent erosional history. Our results demonstrate all experienced sufficient erosion remove most nuclides formed prior Last Glacial Maximum. This finding inconsistent with preservation surficial (<1–2 m) landforms non-erosive ice during last period, while simultaneously demonstrating post-glacial locally rapid (4–10 cm kyr−1) in cold temperate subarctic coastal locations.

Weathering and erosion of fractured bedrock systems
We explore the contribution of fractures (joints) in controlling the rate of weathering advance for a low-porosity rock by using methods of homogenization to create averaged weathering equations. The rate of advance of the weathering front can be expressed as the same rate observed in non-fractured media (or in an individual block) divided by the volume fraction of nonfractured blocks in the fr...

[1] Sea level rise in the Gulf ofMexico has occurred at a rate of 1.8–2.2 mm/yr during the 20th century, or nearly the same as observed globally due to combined steric and water mass changes. Tide gauges in coastal Louisiana, however, record a substantially larger rate of rise and while a number of causal mechanismsmay be responsible, their specific contribution is poorly understood. Using a re...
متن کاملSelective glacial erosion and weathering zones in the coastal mountains of Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica
In the coastal mountains of Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica, there is a juxtaposition of ice moulded landforms at lower altitudes and upstanding summits with weathered surfaces bearing tors. This paper uses geomorphological mapping and exposure dating to test two hypotheses commonly used to explain such a landscape contrast: either the pattern reflects contrasts in glacial erosion related to the ba...

Mountains of Norway. Its Little Ice Age maximum occurred about 1750 when it deposited a well-defined end moraine. Since then it has retreated leaving a series of recessional moraines. All of these moraines have been dated lichenometrically by Matthews (see Matthews, 1992 for a comprehensive summary). We used this series of dated moraines to investigate the early stages of pedogenesis, the early...
